Susan is a native of the Columbia area. She believes that her family background, and her first career, as an at-home mom for "three amazing children," was the best preparation for her current practice of counseling psychology, enabling her to understand developmental issues and “why people do what they do.” In 1991 she completed a masters degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and began practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor. Susan then completed her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 1997.
Dr. Murray Smart believes in holistic treatment for the individual, including healthy self-care in not only the emotional arena, but also in the physical, social, and spiritual realms. Some of her specialty focuses in counseling are: recovery from abuse, marital and family issues, divorce and step-parenting issues, eating disorders, navigating life changes, and integrating faith into life.
In 1998 Susan was the key founder of the MorningStar Counseling Center in Columbia, and served there as its Clinical Director for several years. Dr. Murray Smart has also seen clients at the Women's Wellness Center in Columbia. In 2006 Susan, her husband Dr. Bill Smart, and other colleagues, started a personal development workshop called Grace Encounter, which they gave leadership to for 12 years.
